Write Amiga Disks on PC: Step-by-Step Guide

Write Amiga Disks on PC

Writing Amiga disks from a PC?

Amiga disks can be trickly to write from a standard PC drive, external USB drives are not compatible with amiga disk formats, the simplest solution is to use a modern greaseweazle compatible drive, these devices can read and write almost any floppy disk even protected games disks and can be connected via a single USB to PC's, Linux and Apple Mac

What you'll need

Step 1: Prepare your disk image

The most common Amiga disk image format for unprotected standard amigados disks is the .ADF image format - these can be downloaded online and many are released for free by publishers and Amiga developers for instance reassembler on Youtube has documented his conversion of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Amiga 1200 and has released a 1 level demo as a .adf - this can be easily written to disk with modern hardware

Step 2: Connect your hardware

Hardware connection is really easy just plug the USB cable into a free port USB 2 or USB 3 ports will work, be aware that it best to connect directly to a USB port on the motherboard on a desktop machine as sometime front case USB connectors and usb hubs may causes errors or make the connection unreliable

Step 3: Writing the image to disk

You will need to download the Greasweazle software and a suitable GUI - graphic interface to interact with

Step 4: Verifying the disk works

The greasweazle gui will show the tracks being written and report any errors as it writes, one all tracks have been written, it time to test the disk - this can be done on a real amiga or an emulator - you can also read real amiga disks on a PC and run the software using the WinUAE Amiga Emulator and a plugin from Rob Smith that allows read disks be accessed.
